5 Money Saving Home Improvements For Spring

1.  Check caulking and insulation around windows, doors, and any other openings into the home.  If you follow our blog, you’ve already seen this suggestion several times. Hopefully you’ve already done it! If you have, it’s always good to do a quick check to make sure it’s still providing a good seal and that the weather stripping or other insulations are still intact and in place. It’s very common during the cold season for windows and doors to slightly separate from the frame. This is an easy fix with an application of outdoor silicone caulking or sealant. You can use clear silicone to seal under-door thresholds and stained wood frames.

2.  Plant a shady tree next to your air conditioning unit. It seems like an odd time of year to plant a tree, but with the weather as warm as it’s been, it’s great timing. The great thing about planting a shade tree by your AC unit is that by shading it and keeping it cooler, it can help it run more efficiently.

3.  Inspect (and repair, if necessary) your roof’s flashing, caulking, and shingles before the spring storms. Check for broken or missing shingles. Any areas with flashing should be tight and sealed with roofing sealant. Spring showers can cause water leaks and other costly damage. You know quote by Benjamin Franklin, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

5.  Install an attic fan or vent. Attics can become stiflingly hot. Think about how hot your house gets and STAYS without anything to move that trapped air out! That makes your AC run all the time!  Consider installing a vent to suck that hot air out and off of your ceiling. Ridge vents or an attic fan are both very effective ways to keep the attic cooler during the summer. Now is a great time to do this because most people don’t think to do these things in winter. If you wait until spring, contractors and handymen will have far less scheduling time available.
